MGO (methylglyoxal) is the naturally occurring compound that gives Mānuka honey its unique antibacterial properties. The higher the MGO rating, the more potent the honey. It's the key marker used to measure the strength and quality of genuine Mānuka honey.

Both measure the quality and potency of Mānuka honey but in slightly different ways. MGO measures the concentration of methylglyoxal directly, while UMF™ (Unique Mānuka Factor) is a broader grading system that tests for multiple natural markers including MGO, leptosperin, and HMF.
